Word setup: Layout → Margins → Custom → set "Multiple pages" to Mirror margins, put the gutter value in "Inside". With bleed, add 0.125" to the outside, top and bottom of the page size (never the gutter side) and set outside margins to at least 0.375". Or skip the manual setup — use the Format My Book tab.

How it works: your page size is set to the trim chosen above, the gutter comes from your page count, and margins meet KDP minimums. .docx keeps your images, bold/italic and heading styles — "normalize" unifies stray fonts and sizes into your chosen body font (Word Heading styles keep their larger size; use Heading 1 for chapter titles). .txt builds a fresh book file — lines starting with "Chapter", "Part", "Prologue" etc. (or "# ") become chapter headings that start on a new page. Always run the result through KDP's Print Previewer.
